In an era when companies are constantly seeking new ways to improve performance with AI, many are choosing to focus on a fundamental concept: employee “thriving.” According to Dawn Klinghoffer, VP of People Analytics at Microsoft, this concept has become a “guiding star” for truly understanding the employee experience.

What is "Thriving"?

Microsoft defines "thriving" as "feeling empowered and energized to do meaningful work." In practice, this means asking: Are employees motivated? Do they look forward to future opportunities with enthusiasm?

To measure thriving, Microsoft usesthe Employee Signals survey, a biannual survey of the entire workforce. The results of the latest surveys, however, have revealed a key driver: access to artificial intelligence.

Microsoft's research suggests three key factors that support workplace well-being, all of which are enhanced by access to AI:

Significance

Employees who find their work meaningful are 59% more likely to report being productive and 28% more likely to go the extra mile. AI can lighten the load by generating drafts, analyzing data, or serving as a brainstorming partner. Integrating AI into the workday has increased meaningfulness scores by 20%.

Autonomy

The results of Microsoft's survey indicate that AI enables people to feel more empowered in their work. Access to AI tools and resources has led to a 34% increase in scores on questions related to empowerment.

Energy

Employees who feel energized are 44% more likely to feel proud of their work and 22% more likely to take the initiative to be productive. The introduction of AI tools has led to higher reported energy levels, with scores increasing by nearly 27%.

These figures clearly demonstrate how AI can become a key tool for improving employee well-being. Access to advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence not only boosts productivity but also has a positive impact on employee morale and job satisfaction.

The ABCs of AI Integration for Employee Well-Being

So how can we integrate it? Dawn Klinghoffer proposes a three-point model for effectively integrating AI:

  • A- Accelerate alignment: Strengthen the connections between employees, the company’s mission, and the transformative potential of AI. Clarify how AI initiatives align with business objectives and employee roles.

  • B- Be inclusive: Create an environment where all employees feel equipped to interact with AI by providing training and resources and fostering a culture of innovation.

  • C- Cultivate collective growth: Create a culture that empowers employees to decide how best to do their jobs, by offering flexibility and encouraging them to explore how AI can free up time for creative and strategic work.

In conclusion, Microsoft’s research findings provide concrete evidence of how AI can serve as a true catalyst for organizational well-being. The key to success lies in integrating AI in a way that permeates culture, training, and people management.
